AUSTRALIA TO PARTICIPATE IN BURMA RECONCILIATION FORUM

The Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Chris Gallus, will lead Australia’s delegation to participate in an international forum on reconciliation in Burma.

‘The meeting in Bangkok on 15 December, will bring 11 countries together with the Burmese Foreign Minister, U Win Aung, to discuss the roadmap for democracy in Burma announced in August,’ Mrs Gallus said.

‘Australia is contributing to international efforts to urge Burma to implement its roadmap which needs to include a clear timetable if it is to maintain credibility.’

‘The roadmap must also allow the participation of Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy as well as ethnic groups,’ Mrs Gallus said

The meeting will be hosted by the Thai Foreign Minister, Dr Surakiart Sathirathai, and attended by participants from Asia and Europe and the UN Special Envoy for Burma, Razali Ismail.
