Nuclear industry fails the safety test again

“The nuclear accident in Japan overnight exposes to more critical scrutiny the industry’s claims that it is saf e” Senator Nick Bolkus, Shadow Minister for Environment and Heritage said today.

“The accident at Tokaimura is further evidence the nuclear industry is one riddled with inherent dangers" Senator Bolkus said

“We have been told for a good decade, since Chernobyl that the industry had got its house in order.

“However it has become apparent once again that the nuclear industry is one with inherent and sometimes uncontrollable dangers.

“As we have seen from this and other incidents, when something goes wrong there are enormous ramifications, affecting the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

“At this stage it is important for the Japanese Government to conduct an open inquiry into what went wrong at Tokaimura.

“It is also important for the industry to revise its claims of safety.” Senator Bolkus said.
