The Great Tropical Drive in North Queensland has been recognised for excellence with a Gold Award in the marketing category of the prestigious Pacific Asia Travel Association awards.

The Great Tropical Drive is a self-drive touring route that winds its way from palm-fringed beaches to ancient rainforests and the golden outback of North Queensland.

The Great Tropical Drive Program was funded $6 million by the Australian Government and delivered through a joint venture agreement between Tourism Tropical North Queensland and Townsville Enterprise Ltd.

Congratulating the proponents, the Minister for Small Business and Tourism, Fran Bailey, said the award was a fitting endorsement for an initiative that was both innovative and educational.

"The Great Tropical Drive offers a spectacular driving holiday for tourists and locals alike,” Fran Bailey, Minister for Small Business and Tourism, said.

"If you are looking for a great driving holiday, why don't you explore the Great Tropical Drive and find out why it has been so deservedly recognised.

"The whole Great Tropical Drive experience covers 2079 kilometres and visitors who want to cover all of this can do so over a recommended 12-day itinerary.

"This itinerary takes in some of Australia’s best-known attractions including the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest, Hinchinbrook Island and Undara Lava Tubes, as well as offering many unexpected discoveries along the way.

"The Great Tropical Drive is also broken down into 13 shorter Discovery Trails or six Experiential Trails, each one with a unique itinerary to provide a taste of Tropical Australia, from day trips or overnight drives to the Cairns Highlands, to week-long 4WD and campervan adventures into the goldfields."
