National Youth Roundtable 2000 in Canberra for discussions with and presentation to Government.

K185 10 October 2000

Dr David Kemp, Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs warmly welcomed a group of dedicated and committed young Australians back to Canberra today, as he opened the October meeting of National Youth Roundtable 2000. Members of the Roundtable will hold meetings with Ministers and present findings from their year’s work to the Government this week.

"The Roundtable members’ Community Action Projects have attracted impressive levels of participation within their communities," said Dr Kemp.

"The members are a remarkable group of young Australians who have devoted large amounts of time, energy and work to strengthen their communities and improve the circumstances and opportunities for other young people."

Members of the Roundtable have travelled from towns, cities and islands across Australia for their meeting. Since their last meeting in April, members have been actively consulting with young people in their local communities about issues that concern them. During this session they will discuss their ideas and perspectives with Government Ministers and make formal presentations to an audience of Senators, Ministers, Members of Parliament and official guests.

"The members that make up Roundtable 2000 challenge some commonly held perceptions of young people and demonstrate the very positive contribution that young people make to their communities," said Dr Kemp.

"I look forward to hearing the diversity of ideas that Roundtable members will present to Government on Wednesday."
