Dangerous climate change barrier crossed on Howard’s watch

9th Oct 07

Pulp Mill process has been botched by Turnbull

The revelation by Australian of the Year, scientist Tim Flannery, (on ABC Lateline last night) that the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that could cause dangerous climate change was passed in mid-2005 highlights the culpability of Prime Minister John Howard in failing to act over the last decade, Greens Leader Bob Brown said in Melbourne today.

“This level of gases threatens an average global temperature rise of 2 degrees Celsius or more and potentially long-term catastrophic weather changes, sea level rises, food shortages and mass human migration to escape unsafe or untenable living conditions,” Senator Brown said.

“John Howard was asleep on his watch. Australia will never regain this lost decade. The Greens will help keep a Rudd Labor government genuinely responsive to climate change rather than captive to the multi-billion dollar coal industry,” Senator Brown said.

"The Greens have put climate change science right at the heart of our policies. It is vital that we gain balance of power in the Senate to put that science into the heart of Government policies."

“Today’s renewed warning by the Chief Scientist Jim Peacock on the risk of Gunns building its pulp mill without first completing key environmental studies should worry the socks off financiers,” Senator Brown said.

“Dr Peacock says more clean-up mechanisms may be necessary and ‘cost another big sum of money’. CEO John Gay has made it clear Gunns won’t accept such modifications. The whole process has been botched first by Premier Lennon, now by Malcolm Turnbull.”
