Media Release Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alexander Downer

9 March 2001

Inaugural meeting of the East Asia - Latin America Forum

I will attend the inaugural Ministerial meeting of the East Asia-Latin America Forum (EALAF) in Santiago de Chile on 29-30 March.

EALAF, which was established in 1999 at the initiative of Singapore and Chile, will bring together up to 27 Foreign Ministers from the East Asia and Latin American regions.

The Ministers will consider opportunities for improving trans-regional relations and discuss areas of greater possible cooperation, including trade, education, culture and science and technology.

The meeting will also consider a framework document setting out the principles of the Forum's future operations.

This inaugural meeting will be a valuable forum for increasing Australia's dialogue with both East Asia and Latin America and is expected to consider a second meeting at Ministerial-level in the future.
