Statement Re Inquiry into Permanent Resident in Immigration Detention

VPS 029/2005

' The Prime Minister has today confirmed there will be an inquiry into the case,' Senator Vanstone said.

'I will receive a full briefing on the matter from my department. I will then consider an appropriate person to conduct the inquiry and the nature of the inquiry.

'The Terms of Reference will be framed to ensure all aspects of the case are considered, including the involvement of Immigration, Commonwealth and State health providers and police.

'The Commonwealth has already indicated it will cooperate with any New South Wales Police inquiry. The Commonwealth looks forward to receiving similar cooperation from New South Wales, Queensland and South Australian authorities.'
