  Media Release HO8/2002 - 25 January 2002

Newest Citizens for Tasmania on Australia Day 2002

Seventy-five people are expected to become Australian citizens in seven ceremonies to be held in Tasmania during the Australia Day period this year.

Ceremonies in Tasmania will include a gathering of 31 new citizens at Pavilion Point in Hobart to a ceremony for one new citizen at Lyons Park in Devonport.

Following the Hobart citizenship ceremony, there will be an affirmation ceremony inviting Australians to affirm their loyalty to our nation and welcome new citizens into our community.

Celebrations in Tasmania will include Aussie morning teas, bands, Australia Day Awards and flag raising ceremonies.

This year more than 8,100 candidates for citizenship will make their pledge as part of the Australia Day celebrations at ceremonies across the nation. Last year there were approximately 7,000 participants in citizenship ceremonies during the Australia Day period, with about 6,500 the year before.

Citizenship applications are approved under the direction of the Commonwealth Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Gary Hardgrave. However, the Minister authorises senior elected and appointed officials in Local Government (Mayors, Town Clerks etc) to confer citizenship and welcome new citizens as formal members of the Australian community. Most citizenship ceremonies are conducted by Local Government.
