John Anderson

Minister for Transport and Regional Services

29 June 1999

The Federal Government has appointed Air Marshal Leslie Fisher AO (Retd) to the Board of Airservices Australia, and reapp ointed Captain John Faulkner and Mr Kevin Gale.

The Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Anderson, announced the appointments today.

Mr Anderson said: “Airservices Australia operates one of the best air traffic control systems in the world. As a group, its directors need to have expertise in aviation and high technology, as well as the corporate skills needed to direct an organisation with 4,000 employees.

“Air Marshal Fisher was Chief of Air Force from 1994 to 1998, crowning a 38 year career in the RAAF. Air Marshal Fisher advocated flying safety awareness, and managed 20,000 personnel with a budget of $1.5 billion. He is now a director of Celsius Pacific and a consultant to Lockheed Martin.

“Air Marshal Fisher’s enormous experience in military aviation and government processes will be very valuable to the Airservices Australia board, and will improve the level of understanding between the Government’s civil aviation organisations and the RAAF.

“Captain John Faulkner has been Deputy Chairman of Airservices Australia since 1995. Captain Faulkner retired from Qantas in 1994 as Manager Flight Safety and Deputy Head of Safety. He runs his own consultancy, and is an adjunct Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales, where he lectures in aviation safety.

“Mr Kevin Gale has a diverse aviation background, with more than 40 years experience in general aviation as a pilot and instructor. He worked as an air traffic controller from 1966 to 1993, and held every senior ATC management position in New South Wales.”

“Captain Faulkner and Mr Gale have been reappointed until June 2000 and June 2001 respectively. Air Marshal Fisher has been appointed until June 2002,” Mr Anderson said.
