Food Labelling Bill fails - farmers' call rejected

15th Sep 05

The Coalition and Labor opposition have opposed the Greens’ ‘Truth in Labelling Bill’ in the Senate this afternoon. Senator Brown’s bill aimed to ensure imported food is labelled with its country of origin. It also required food derived from genetically modified crops to be labelled as such. And the bill requires the government to have information on other food contamination including heavy metals and pesticides to be posted on a website.

“Just 2 months after hundreds of farmers protested, with their tractors, outside Parliament House, the National, Liberal and Labor parties have voted down a Greens bill to meet their demands”, Senator Brown said.
