John Forrest, The Nationals Federal Member for Mallee today welcomed the announcement that $17.7 million has been provided to Scouts Australia for the installation of rainwater tanks in Scout Halls across the nation.

The funding will assist the Scouts in North West Victoria to generate significant water savings, a tangible demonstration of the actions we can take to conserve our precious water resources.

Mr Forrest said this contribution to Scouts Australia marks the centenary of world scouting, a movement involving around 28 million scouts world-wide and alumni estimated at more than 500 million people.

“There is no more fitting way to commemorate 100 years of scouting worldwide than helping the Scouts of Australia in this practical way to learn about and practice wise water use” said Mr Forrest.

Australia was one of the first countries in the world to adopt Scouting. 2008 will mark the 100th year of Scouting in Australia.

To commemorate this event, the Australian Government has decided to designate 2008 as the “Year of the Scout”. In addition, the Royal Australian Mint will strike a circulating coin next year to commemorate this event.

“More than 2 million people have been part of Australian scouting in the last 100 years. Scouting has become the largest youth development organisation in the nation.

The Coalition Government greatly values the contribution these young Australians make to their families, their communities and the entire nation.
