E&oe___________________________________________Australia’s contribution to Iraq

Senator Hill:

This is my fifth visit in two years to Baghdad.

On this occasion I’m pleased to have been able to come to congratulate the Prime Minister on the formation of his new Government.

And, as it’s the first visit I’ve made since the election, particularly through him, I congratulate the Iraqi people on the success of the elections.

Australia stands firm on wanting to continue to support the Iraqi Government on its process of democratisation, and to continue to support the Iraqi people as they rebuild their country.

At the moment we’re doing that through helping in the training of Iraqi security forces and through our aid program.

I’ve indicated to the Prime Minister that over time there are other ways in which we can continue to strengthen the relationship to mutual benefit and thus ensure that the Iraqi people achieve all the success that they deserve.
