Senator Scullion today reminded Territorians to nominate a local for Senior Australian of the Year 2005.

“Time is running out to nominate an Australian aged 60 or over who has made a contribution to the Territory and to our nation,” Senator Scullion said.

“Nominations for the 2005 awards close on 20 August, and people should get their nominations in now to ensure they are considered for this year’s award.

“There are many older Territorians in our local community who, through their work and contribution, make us proud and enrich the lives of so many people. They are the characters and the backbone of the Territory.

“This is your opportunity to recognise the work of someone you think is helping to make the Territory and Australia a better place to live.”

The current Senior Australian of the Year is Tehree Gordon, who founded the Jirrahlinga Koala and Wildlife Sanctuary in Victoria and spends much of her time caring for abused children and helping to build their self-esteem through interaction with the animals at her sanctuary. She has also set up an animal care program in Barwon Heads Prison.

“Tehree is a great example of someone who helped her local area through tireless work throughout her life,”Senator Scullion said.

“We all know someone who deserves to be recognised and should nominate him or her for this prestigious award.”

Nomination forms are available at Commonwealth Bank branches, on-line at www.australianoftheyear.gov.au or may be obtained by phoning 1300 655 193.
