Nigel Scullion Senator for the Northern Territory Media Release LOCAL FUNDING FOR LOCAL PEOPLE 5th September 2005 Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, today encouraged local Northern Territory community organisations to apply for a share in up to $20 million in Australian Government funding under round three of the highly successful Local Answers initiative. Senator Scullion welcomed the funding announcement by the Minister for Family and Community Services, Senator Kay Patterson. “The Local Answers initiative, part of the Australian Government’s $490 million Stronger Families and Communities Strategy, helps strengthen disadvantaged communities by funding local, small-scale, time limited projects. “This funding will allow our community to identify and develop local solutions to address local issues. “Previous projects funded under the initiative have helped communities build better parenting and relationship skills, support mentoring and leadership programs and encourage access to training and education for young parents. “To Date, the Australian Government has approved over $40 million to fund more than 260 projects. The total funding for Local Answers is $137 million over five years. The Northern Territory has had seven approved projects from round one and two totalling $1,312,619. “This much needed funding will ensure our local organisations remain strong and viable by providing the necessary services for our community. “I commend the Australian Government on delivering on its commitment to strengthen local communities and encourage all community organisations in the Territory to apply for funding,” Senator Scullion said. Applications for Local Answers Round Three close 5pm, Friday 23 September 2005.
