Cunningham MP Michael Organ says the State government’s $40 million upgrade of Lawrence Hargrave Drive will come too late to save many Northern Illawarra businesses, despite the $2 million community fund.

“Today’s disclosures about the condition of the road are a damning indictment of the Roads and Traffic Authority, which spent more than $4 million on rectification works just last year”, Mr. Organ said.

“Residents put up with a two month closure last year on the promise that a solution would be found, only to find the road constantly closed again every time it rained.”

“The RTA has been less than frank with the community, and it has taken massive pressure to get Roads Minister Carl Scully to agree that action is needed.”

“For the Minister to blithely announce that the road will be closed for another two and a half years is intolerable. $2 million won’t mitigate the impacts of a further closure and Mr. Scully must find a way of allowing the road to open, at least partially, while the upgrading takes place”, Mr. Organ said.
