Brown condemns Japanese whalers' use of Hobart port

22nd Jun 2005

Greens Senator Bob Brown has called for federal, state and port authority action to stop Japanese whaling ships using Hobart as a resupply and refuelling port.

The ships are the Nippon Suisan company’s whalers Shonan Maru, Shonan Maru 2 and Toshi Maru 2. Federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell says use of Hobart and Fremantle by the ships is a possible breach of Australian law.

Yesterday the Senate passed Senator Bob Brown’s motion calling for Australian ports to be closed to such ships.

“It will run a shudder down Tasmanian spines to think that these whale killers are being replenished in Hobart,” Senator Brown said.
