Press Release Ref: 1006 Published: 24/7/2003 Title: Nairn Welcomes Cabinet Decision to assist Small Airlines

A Cabinet decision to assist smaller regional airlines such as Rex by insisting Government departments provide a reasonable level of business on the Canberra to Sydney route has been welcomed by the Federal Member for Eden Monaro Gary Nairn.

“I’ve been working closely with Senator Gary Humphries and local Rex investor Mr Bob Winnel over the last month to achieve this result,” Mr Nairn said.

“My electorate of Eden Monaro is dependent upon Rex for regular flights to Moruya and Merimbula and if such regional routes are to be maintained the high volume routes such as Canberra to Sydney must have reasonable usage.”

Mr Nairn said the Government would also appoint an independent assessor to scrutinise departmental travel bookings. The assessor would also examine the efforts of Qantas Business Travel to provide the best fare.

“It’s now up to the various Government departments to ensure their staff adopt a much fairer attitude to airline usage. I understand that Rex provides very competitive prices and reasonable daily flight schedules. I will continue to monitor progress on this,” Mr Nairn said.

Government departments and agencies will be required to report regularly to their Minister and Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet on their performance against the objective.

“This is a realistic and achievable approach for smaller airlines,” Mr Nairn said.
