Turnbull urged to lead a Greener Coalition

The Australian Greens have welcomed Malcolm Turnbull as the new leader of the Federal Liberal Party, and urged him to lead a green renewal in the Coalition.

“Malcolm Turnbull has the chance to unite the Coalition and support greener policies, as Australians expect,” Australian Greens Leader Senator Bob Brown said today.

Senator Brown said Mr Turnbull was right to say ‘Australians can do anything’.

“Let that begin with an emissions trading scheme that leads the world, and reconfigures Australia’s economy to zero-carbon, renewable energy, and sets course to deliver the tens of thousands of green-collar jobs that will flow from that economic restructure.”

Senator Brown said Mr Turnbull was a welcome injection of new style and pizzazz to Australia’s politics.

“But we now have two parties lead by the big end of town.”

“The coal companies and bankers will be happy.”

“The Greens, more and more, are the third party here to represent the average Australians in toughening times, economically and environmentally.”

“Witness our leadership in the debate on pensions and climate change.”

“I look forward to working with both Turnbull and Rudd,” Senator Brown said.
