Murray Shares Flood Funding

Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone congratulated local organisations who successfully applied for Federal funding under the Natural Disaster Mitigation program to help protect Murray from the threat of flooding.

“While it is a little odd to be thinking about flooding during the worst drought on record, the fact is that it will rain heavily again some time and it is best that we have excellent plans in place,” Dr Stone said.

Funding from the Natural Disaster Mitigation program will be allocated towards the following projects: $103,470 to Moira Shire Council for the Implementation of the Nathalia Floodplain Management Plan;

$35,000 to Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority for an Urban Stormwater Flooding Study in Shepparton; and $20,000 to Moira Shire Council for the Barmah township flood Mitigation Plan.

“Moira Shire Council will continue works implementing the Nathalia Floodplain Management Plan which includes extensive upgrading and constructing of levees and other works, as well as buying a section of a temporary flood barrier system,” Dr Stone said.

“The Barmah flood mitigation plan involves developing a comprehensive plan in consultation with the public and local landowners.

“The stormwater flood study in Shepparton will develop mapping for a range of different storm severities including a community education program to help the community recover from a flood,” Sharman Stone said.
