“Citizenship Day - Wednesday 17 September”

Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Ellison and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and Citizenship, Louise Markus today encouraged Australians to celebrate Australian Citizenship Day.

“Australian Citizenship Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate what it means to be Australian and also to reflect on the importance of Australian Citizenship”, said Louise Markus.

Australian Citizenship Day has been celebrated annually since 2001on the 17th of September.

“I have spoken with many people who have come from other countries who are proud to now call themselves Australian and be part of the Australian family”, said Louise Markus.

“They have chosen to live in Australia and call themselves Australian because we are a country of opportunity, we believe in freedom of choice and we believe rewarding those who work hard”.

“Australian Citizenship Day is an opportunity for Australians to unite and celebrate our diversity, democracy, responsibilities and values. This is what makes us uniquely Australian”, said Senator Chris Ellison.

“This is an opportunity for us to look to the future so we can build for our families and future generations and also acknowledge Australia’s first Australians”.

Since 1949 over 4 million people have become Australian Citizens since Australian citizenship was introduced. Approximately 95 percent of Australia’s population is made up of Australian Citizens.
