The Hon Peter Dutton MP Shadow Minister for Finance, Competition Policy and Deregulation

Australian families will receive no relief at the petrol pump this Easter weekend as the Rudd Government takes a holiday from their apparent fight against rising petrol prices.

Shadow Minister for Finance, Competition Policy and Deregulation, Peter Dutton, has today slammed the Rudd Government for failing their first big test in the fight against rising petrol prices.

''Kevin Rudd has misled the Australian public into believing the Petrol Commissioner would come down hard on petrol prices over Easter,'' Mr Dutton said.

''And now Labor has admitted that the Commissioner will not even commence work until March 31.

''After leading Australian families to believe he would bring petrol prices down, Kevin Rudd is desperate to be seen to be doing something.

''Yet he has done nothing about petrol prices which continue to rise,'' Mr Dutton said.

''And now leading into Easter the ACCC has labelled the latest hikes as justified.

''The reality is that nothing has changed to help the challenges faced by Australian families as they fill up their cars.

''If Kevin Rudd and Labor are serious about addressing rising petrol prices, the Petrol Commissioner would be on the ground now with real powers to tackle the price hikes.''
