Australia and India unite through research programme

10 March 2006

The Prime Minister’s announcement to establish a new $25 million bilateral research programme with India and new Endeavour fellowships has been welcomed by the Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP.

“The establishment of the $20 million Australia-India Strategic Research Fund will increase significantly Australia’s science and technology engagement with India, and will promote multi-disciplinary research collaboration between the two countries,” Ms Bishop said.

The $5 million fellowships are comprised of:

• Endeavour India Research Fellowships ($3.5 million), providing top researchers from India an opportunity to undertake short-term postgraduate and postdoctoral research in any field of study in Australia, and Australians to do the same in India; and

• Endeavour Executive Awards ($1.5 million) providing professional development opportunities for high achievers in business, industry, education and government from Australia and India at their counterpart organisations.

Ms Bishop also welcomed the signing of a Biotechnology Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries which will facilitate increased research cooperation in this significant field of science.

“These initiatives demonstrate the importance the Australian Government places on our education, science and technology relationship with India,” Ms Bishop said.

“The result will increase the links between Australian and Indian scientists and their research institutions, to the benefit of both nations. The Government is committed to strengthening and expanding its relationship with India and I look forward to the future growth of this partnership.”

The establishment of the Fund and the signing of the biotechnology agreement follows a meeting between Dr Manmohan Singh, India’s Prime Minister and Prime Minister John Howard who is currently visiting India.
