Rudd Government spends $146,000 per day on Climate Change advertising

The Rudd Government is spending $13.95 million - or $146,842.10 per day - on climate change advertising, it was revealed in a Senate Estimates hearing late last night.

Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Senator Eric Abetz, said Department of Climate Change officials also revealed that $9,971,005.10 had been spent to date on the campaign, which started in July and is set to conclude in November.

"No one wonder Climate Change Minister Wong refused to reveal the cost of this advertising when the campaign was launched in July", Senator Abetz said.

"This is an astonishing amount of money to be spent, given that Government legislation has not yet been drafted, let alone gone anywhere near enactment.

"When in Opposition, Senator Wong, as Labor's spokesperson on Public Accountability, repeatedly attacked the then Howard Government for running Government advertising before legislation had passed the parliament.

"This is a gross case of hypocrisy from Senator Wong and the Rudd Government.

"They should act immediately to cancel the remaining weeks of the campaign."
