Fri, 25th January 2008 AUSTRALIA DAY - A DAY FOR ALL AUSTRALIANS TO CELEBRATE THE ROLE OF MIGRATION

Senator the Hon Christopher Ellison Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Manager of Opposition Business in the Senate

''This Saturday, 26th January is Australia Day, a day for all Australians to celebrate being Australians, and living in Australia. It is a day to celebrate our country and the contribution that we each make to our family, our community and our nation. It is also a day to reflect on our migration heritage and it's role in the success of our great country.'' said Senator Ellison today.

''Australia is a country built upon migration and Australia Day is a great day to celebrate the contribution of all migrants, our recent arrivals, our ancestor's who came to this great land and their descendents. We are a nation of individuals who are committed to working hard, advancing ourselves and our families, of lending a hand to our mates and of great community commitment.''

Life in Australia is full of the challenges of nature, already this year we have experienced bushfires, floods and of course much of our nation is suffering the effects of the drought. Natural disaster, important local issues, individual struggle and of course triumph is part of life in Australia.

''Australia Day is a day to be reminded of and celebrate our strong sense of community spirit that we share. To celebrate the Australian way of life, that we come together to support each other in times of need and celebrate each others times of joy. It is a day for all of us to celebrate being Australian, celebrate the opportunities this great nation offers us, it is a day for all us to celebrate,'' said Senator Ellison.
