Australian JobSearch site part of Internet Job Ad Growth

The increasing shift to Internet job advertising and job searching has vindicated the Federal Government’s decision last year to enhance the range of internet based job search facilities, Federal Employment Services Minister, Mal Brough said today.

Mr Brough was commenting on the Olivier Internet Job Index for May which showed continued growth in internet job adverts. He said there were currently over 71,000 jobs on the public Australian Jobsearch (JobSearch) website - the cyber face of the Job Network.

Mr Brough said that a significant part of the new Job Network services introduced last year included electronic resumes for all Job Network clients, overnight matching of resumes to possible job opportunities, and interactive voice and SMS match notification for job seekers.

“We have seen increased advertising on the Internet from a range of job boards and employers and these latest advertising figures vindicate our efforts to integrate technology into job search activity,” Mr Brough said.

Mr Brough said that while many of these jobs were accessible through Job Network, there were a considerable number of jobs advertised directly by employers and many jobs advertised by licensed Job Placement agencies were accessible for all potential applicants even if they were not Job Network clients.

“We aim to compliment not compete with other job boards, all of which have a valued role in job search for a diverse range of job seekers. However, with over 70,000 jobs from a variety of sources, JobSearch is one of the leaders,” Mr Brough said.

“There are over 650,000 active resumes on the system being matched and each and every night there are up to 120,000 potential matches against new jobs for job seekers to follow up.”

“These matches can be notified by email, via job seekers personal web pages which are provided to Job Network clients, by SMS and by interactive phone messaging for the cost of a local call.”

Mr Brough said that the use of technology had contributed to the performance of the Job Network and its record number of job placements which had occurred despite criticism from the Labor Party and its preference for outdated card based job boards with their grubby and dog-eared job cards.

“Putting the Job Network at the forefront of job searching technology has been important in dealing with a dynamic job market and the Howard Government has driven the Job Network to record job placement results,” Mr Brough said

Job seekers can access the range of Internet based services at www.jobsearch.gov.au or use touch screen kiosks at Centrelink or Job Network providers.
