Media Release 14 February 2006

The Federal Member for Newcastle today invited nominations for the 2006 Sharon Grierson Education Scholarships.

Students who live and study at university or TAFE in the Federal electorate of Newcastle, who are entering their second year of study after successfully completing the first year of their current course last year, and who receive Austudy, Youth Allowance or Abstudy, are eligible to nominate for the Scholarships.

The two Scholarships each consist of a $250 book voucher.

“I am pleased to be able to assist and encourage Novocastrian students to continue their studies,” Ms Grierson said. “Increased costs of living, expected reductions in student services after the introduction of voluntary student unionism, and the necessity of juggling work and study all make it increasingly difficult for students.”

Last year’s Scholarship winners were Sam Rowe, a Science/Architecture student at the University of Newcastle, and Sam Hughes, a Fine Arts student at the Hunter Institute of TAFE.

Mr Hughes, an Aboriginal artist who has since had his work hung in the prestigious Brett Whitely Travelling Art Award and who has an exhibition of his work opening at the Volume Artspace on 18 February, said he was grateful to receive the Scholarship last year.

“The Sharon Grierson Education Scholarship and the book voucher allowed me to acquire materials which were otherwise out of my reach. It really helped me build up my resources, and cross some big things off my wish list!” he said.

Nominations close at 5pm on Friday 24th February, and the Scholarships will be awarded in March. Nomination forms and further information can be obtained from the Office of Sharon Grierson: • 427 Hunter Street, Newcastle • 4926 1555
