SEX DISCRIMINATION AMENDMENT A WASTE OF TIME

The Sex Discrimination Amendment (Teaching Profession) Amendment Bill is a waste of the parliament’s time, Cunningham MP Michael Organ told the House of Representatives this morning.

“The NSW Teachers’ Federation, along with their counterparts in Queensland and Western Australia, doesn’t support it, and neither does the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission”, Mr. Organ said.

“As I told the House this morning the Bill rests on a fundamentally flawed principle.”

“The government admits that research shows that teaching is not an attractive career option for men for reasons including concerns about salary and the perception of a risk of allegations of abusing children in schools.”

“How in heaven’s name does offering gender-specific scholarships address concerns about salary and the perception of a risk of allegations of abusing children in schools?”

“All the rhetoric in the world about providing male role models for boys in schools doesn’t answer that fundamental question, yet that is all that the Attorney-General offered in justification for this legislation”, Mr. Organ said.
