SENATOR THE HON. CHRISTOPHER ELLISON

Minister for Justice and Customs

Senator for Western Australia

E93/03 17 July 2003

Supporting local approaches to justice and community safety

The Minister for Justice and Customs, Senator Chris Ellison announced funding of $50,000 for the Tjurabalan Council Of Australian Government (COAG) trial at a meeting with the Halls Creek Shire Council and representatives from a number of Aboriginal communities in the area. Discussions were held on plans to address justice and community safety issues in the region.

Halls Creek is a key service centre for Tjurabalan and region which was announced on 2 July 2003 by the Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson as one of the sites for the COAG whole-of-government service delivery trials to Indigenous communities and regions.

“Justice and associated issues of alcohol misuse and violence have been identified by the local communities as the most important issues for the people of Tjurabalan and region,” Senator Ellison said.

“I am pleased to contribute $50,000 from the Commonwealth’s National Crime Prevention program to provide practical support for the process of bringing together people in communities to work through these important issues and identify strategies to address them,” Senator Ellison said.

“This will enable a grass roots approach to the problem of alcohol abuse and violence.”

Communities in Tjurabalan and region are planning to hold a series of ‘bush meetings’ to identify local approaches to the issues of justice and community safety.

“It’s important that approaches to address some of the issues of alcohol misuse and violence are driven by organisations and individuals at the local level and that governments at all levels work together to assist these local initiatives wherever possible.

Senator Ellison expressed his support for the COAG trial and for the direction taken by local communities.

“The Commonwealth Government is committed to working with State and Local Government and, importantly, local communities towards achieving the objectives of the trial and improved justice outcomes,” Senator Ellison said.
