Appointment of the Privacy Commissioner and members of the Privacy Advisory Committee

Cabinet Secretary, Senator Joe Ludwig, today announced the appointment of Mr Timothy Pilgrim as the Privacy Commissioner, and the appointment of Ms Barbara Robertson, Professor Michael Kidd and Ms Joan Sheedy as part-time members of the Privacy Advisory Committee.

Mr Pilgrim’s appointment is for a period of five years.

Mr Pilgrim has a very strong background in privacy issues and has held the position of Deputy Privacy Commissioner since February 1998.

“I am confident that Mr Pilgrim’s experience and operational knowledge of the office will be of great assistance when the office transitions to form part of the new Office of the Australian Information Commissioner which will open its doors on 1 November 2010,” Senator Ludwig said.

Mr Pilgrim will fill the vacancy in the office created by the expiration of the term of appointment of the previous Privacy Commissioner, Ms Karen Curtis, on 12 July 2010. Minister Ludwig thanked Ms Curtis for her significant contribution to privacy in Australia as Privacy Commissioner for last 6 years.

Mr Pilgrim was selected following an open merit based selection process, in accordance with the Guidelines introduced by the Government in 2008.

Ms Barbara Robertson, Professor Michael Kidd and Ms Joan Sheedy have been appointed as part-time members of the Privacy Advisory Committee, each for a period of two years.

The Committee will advise the Privacy Commissioner on matters relevant to his functions, recommend material for inclusion in guidelines to be issued by the Commissioner and to engage in and promote community education and consultation in relation to the protection of individual privacy.

“Each member brings a special set of skills and knowledge to the role,” said Senator Ludwig.

Ms Robertson is the Chief Privacy Officer and Head of Notices at the National Australia Bank and has been actively involved in the personal information and governance framework.
