GIVING SINGLE ADF MEMBERS A PLACE TO COME HOME TO

The Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, today announced that single Australian Defence Force (ADF) members are now able to retain their Defence-funded accommodation when they deploy on operations overseas for six months or more.

“Single ADF members now have the choice of either retaining their Defence-funded accommodation while they deploy overseas on operations or having their personal possessions stored while they are away,” Mr Snowdon said.

“Up to now, the majority of ADF members in this situation were required to have their personal goods removed to storage, vacate their accommodation and face the challenge of finding somewhere to live on their return from deployment.

“This new policy allows affected members to choose what is best for them, especially in locations where rental accommodation is hard to get.

“They may retain their Defence or rental accommodation with no disruption and continue making their usual contribution towards rent, or vacate their accommodation and elect the storage option for their personal effects at no cost to themselves.”

Mr Snowdon said that this policy also applies to ADF members on deployment who are not accompanied by their families in their current posting locations, and who occupy Defence accommodation or receive rent allowance.

“Access to subsidised accommodation and rent allowance is a fundamental part of the total employment package for the ADF’s highly mobile workforce and is also an important retention measure,” Mr Snowdon said.

“The former policy did cause some concern for a number of affected ADF members in tight rental markets and I am pleased that a more supportive approach is now in place.

“Our servicemen and women will directly benefit from this policy change and enjoy some peace of mind that they will no longer have to look for a new home on return from deployment overseas.”
