SCHOOL CAREER ADVISERS WIN SCHOLARSHIPS

31 March 2005 MIN 1072A/05

Today I am delighted to announce the winners of 54 scholarships for school career advisers across Australia.

The Australian Government has provided $480,000 in 2005 for these scholarships, which will see 27 career advisers undergo further professional development and study, and an additional 27 undertake an industry placement of their choice.

Career advisers play a vital role in helping young people develop strong career management skills, make smart choices and achieve their aspirations. Good advisers identify and draw out each student’s strengths and aspirations, and provide guidance and information to help them map out the best plan for their future.

To develop the career counselling skills that will help indigenous and other students prepare for life after school, these career advisers will undertake activities such as working on a farm one day a week; studying the impact of technology on farming; understanding the technical skills that students will need to acquire to work effectively in various industries; and studying for a masters degree by distance.

This is an exciting development for these advisers and the young people whose lives they influence. The Australian Government is committed to elevating the standard of career advice and counselling provided in our schools.

The industry placement scholarships, each worth $10,000, will allow advisors to take up a short-term placement and expand their knowledge of workplaces, industries and occupations. They can then provide current advice, based on the real world in which their students will eventually be working.

The study scholarships, each worth $5,000, will help recipients study at post-graduate level to upgrade their career adviser qualifications. This supports the Government’s plan to develop professional standards for career practitioners through the Career Industry Council of Australia.

I warmly congratulate all of the winners and hope they benefit greatly from their scholarship opportunity.
