Federal Member for Flinders, the Hon Greg Hunt MP, met the First Hastings Scouts Group outside Safeway in Hastings on Saturday for their Harmony Day celebratory sausage sizzle.

Mr Hunt said, “Australians of all aged, cultural backgrounds and religions were involved in more than 1700 events held across the country.

Since Harmony Day began in 1999, it has grown in popularity with events being held all over the country by people from all cultural backgrounds and religions to recognise the importance of acceptance and inclusiveness.

Mr Hunt commended the First Hastings Scout Group for their interest and commitment to the Harmony Day cause within their own community.

Harmony Day in Hastings and throughout the nation highlights Australia’s proud heritage of welcoming people from across the globe. We are made up of people from almost 200 countries and speak over 200 languages.

It is a chance for all Australians to celebrate our common ground while respecting the rights for others to express their own culture and beliefs.

The community events also provide us with an opportunity to reaffirm our stance against racism. Australians must be vigilant and always combat intolerance and racism where ever it appears.
