ATSIC urges all to celebrate 'Our Children Our Future' for 2003 NAIDOC Week

ATSIC NSW elected members invite all communities to join in and celebrate NAIDOC week 2003 with the theme “Our Children our Future”.

This year’s theme highlights the importance of ensuring our children have the right to life, to good health, to protection, to education, to an adequate standard of living and much more. Each of us has the power to help build a world fit for our children - and make it a place where every child can grow to adulthood in health, peace and dignity.

Let’s teach our children about their history, culture, and proud heritage of struggle and achievement and be good role models.

To encourage our youth to pursue their education ATSIC NSW in partnership with the NSW Department of Aboriginal Affairs and The New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council will announce 6 one-off scholarships of $1500.00 each, open to all Indigenous NSW students in year 11 or 12 to further their education.

In line with this year’s theme a special performance will occur at a Flag Raising Ceremony at the Sydney Town Hall at which 10 year old Chanell Dargan, winner of the Tamworth Country Music Festival Junior encouragement award and 3rd in the Australasian junior event, will perform the Roger Knox’s song “Streets of Tamworth” accompanied by guitarist Jason Lee Sharp.

The announcement of the scholarships will take place at the Flag Raising Ceremony hosted by the Lord Mayor of Sydney at the Sydney Town Hall, George Street, on Monday 7th of July at 10:00 am.

As in previous years there will be a host of events and celebrations across NSW. Flag raising ceremonies are taking place in a number of council areas across the State.

Contact your nearest Regional ATSIC office or visit the ‘events’ section of the ATSIC website for NAIDOC events and background. NAIDOC is the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee and the week is a way of celebrating and promoting a greater understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and our culture.
