RURAL AGED CARE NURSING SCHOLARSHIPS ON OFFER

People in the region interested in a career in aged care nursing are being urged to apply for an Aged Care

Nursing Scholarship.

Member for Wannon - David Hawker - said today the Australian Government was making available 300 scholarships in 2005, each worth $10,000 a year.

“Nurses play a vital role in our health care system and these scholarships are an important way in which the Australian Government is working to address the shortage of nurses in the aged care sector,” Mr. Hawker said.

“Nursing older Australians is a highly rewarding career and I would encourage people from our region to apply for a scholarship so we have a growing supply of aged care nurses from rural and regio nal areas.

“Recipients of Aged Care Nursing Scholarships in the 2004 round came from rural and regional areas all around Australia and I am keen to see our region well represented next year.

“The scholarships programme is part of a $26.3 million Australian Government’s support for the aged care workforce.

“In the 2002-03 Budget, the Australian Government committed to provide 1,000 aged care scholarships over the next four years.”

Mr. Hawker said the nursing scholarships were an important part of the Australian Government’s comprehensive aged care package which saw the region recently get an extra 29 aged care places supported by $434,000 in additional funding.

He said the scholarships were open to people from regional and rural areas who wanted to do an aged care nursing course at a rural campus of an accredited Australian university.

“Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents and be able to demonstrate a commitment to working in aged care,” Mr. Hawker said

Applications for the 2005 round close on 2 July 2004. Those interested in applying for a scholarship should contact the Royal College of Nursing Australia on 1800 11 66 96 or go to www.rcna.org.au
