Luke is leader of the pack as motor cyclists converge on Canberra

Local Federal MP, Luke Hartsuyker, was at the forefront of raising motorcycle safety awareness when he led more than 10,000 motorcyclists to Canberra’s Parliament House last weekend.

A keen Ducati rider, Mr Hartsuyker was asked by the organisers of the safety awareness ride to lead the motorcyclists into Canberra and onto the front lawn of Parliament House.

Mr Hartsuyker rode from Coffs Harbour to Sydney where he teamed up with thousands of other riders who travelled Indian file to the national capital for the week.

Mr Hartsuyker told the large crowd that motorcycle safety was an issue for all road users.

“Motorcycle road safety is everyone’s responsibility whether you are a driver, rider, pedestrian, pillion or a passenger. We all need to take personal responsibility for safety on our roads,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“There are many things that motor vehicle drivers can do to ensure that motor cyclists are not put at unnecessary risk.

“They can check their mirrors before overtaking, they can ensure all materials are secured to their vehicle and they can allow plenty of distance between their car and a motorcycle.

“The other vital responsibility they can adopt is to ensure that their vehicle is not leaking oil or diesel. This can have dire consequences for a motorcyclist.”

Last Saturday’s awareness ride was organised by Bikers Australia, who stage similar rides every five years. Also in attendance on Saturday was recently appointed Minister for Defence Brendan Nelson.

This year’s ride was attended by bike riders from a cross section of the community.

Mr Hartsuyker said the range of bikes and host of characters from all over Australia made the get together extra special.

“Motorcycle riding attracts people of all ages and all walks of life. It’s what makes being a part of last Saturday’s event so special.

“Meeting with so many bikers really highlighted why motorcycle safety is so important.”
