Member for Wannon, David Hawker, today congratulated the Ararat Legacy Club on their successful application for funding to assist local veterans and war widows.

The Ararat Legacy Club has received a grant of $9,280 under the Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) program, to support the work of the Ararat Legacy Club and its pension and welfare officers.

“This grant will go towards four new computers, a printer and internet access,” Mr Hawker said.

“Through BEST, ex-service organisations such as the Ararat Legacy Club are able to obtain financial help to assist volunteers, fund computer equipment and other resources they need to provide a quality service to the local veteran community.

“Pension and welfare officers provide much needed help to veterans, war widows and widowers, current and former Defence members and their dependants when lodging claims with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs or pursuing an appeal,” Mr Hawker said.

Legatee Steve Shannon, President of Ararat Legacy Club, said the provision of this equipment, funded by the BEST grant, will enable an elevated service to be provided to the 265 war widows in locations throughout the areas of Ararat, Avoca, Beaufort, Stawell and Willaura.

Further information about BEST grants can be obtained on the Department of Veterans’ Affairs website at
