Vanstone fails to deliver on childcare

‘John Howard’s solution to the paid maternity leave debate is a failure and Minister Vanstones systems of family payments do nothing to address the real needs of Australia’s families,’ said Senator Collins today.

Minister Vanstone has finally agreed with Labor that the baby bonus is a flop, and she has acknowledged that families need access to childcare. Yet it is Minister Vanstone who presides over chronic shortages in the number of childcare places.

Not only has Minister Vanstone failed to release more childcare places, but she has withdrawn from any national planning role for long day care places. She has presided over a cap on family day care and out side school hours care places when demand for places has increased significantly.

In Family Day Care there is a national unmet demand of more than 2500 places.

Further, John Howard blames the States for the crisis in outside school hours care but his government’s cap on funded places has influenced a 28 000 shortage in Outside School Hour Care places.

‘This Government has failed Australian families. It has failed because it has not delivered fair and reasonable family assistance and it has failed to provide enough quality social capital such as childcare.’ Said Senator Collins
