Government must release Bracks’ Review immediately

The Rudd Labor Government must release the Bracks Review of the automotive sector tomorrow (31st July), as originally promised, rather than release it under the cover of the Olympics, Shadow Industry Minister Senator Eric Abetz said today.

“The Opposition understands that the Government has had Mr Bracks’ final report since the 16th July”, Senator Abetz said.

“We also understand that the report contains a number of potentially contentious proposals, including for the Government to buy-out thousands of automotive sector jobs.

“There has been too much shadow-boxing on the future of Australia’s automotive sector - its time for the Government to put their cards on the table so that a proper debate can be had.

“The Government must not sit on the this report so they can release it under cover of the Olympic Games and avoid proper scrutiny.”

Senator Abetz noted Senator Carr’s original announcement:

The review will consult widely with stakeholders and will be calling for public submissions. It will provide an interim report to the Government by 31 March 2008, with a final report to be completed by 31 July 2008.

“The interim report was released by the Government on 31 March as promised; any failure to do the same with the final report would be a deliberate attempt to avoid proper scrutiny.”
