Michael Organ MP

Greens Member for Cunningham

***** MEDIA RELEASE *****

18 March 2004

Cunningham MP Michael Organ has congratulated Flinders University students for successfully stalling a 25% increase in HECS fees by occupying the University’s registry building, laying the blame for this drastic action squarely at the feet of the Federal Education Minister Brendan Nelson.

“This occupation is a direct result of the Government’s Higher education policies that are designed to increase student debts way beyond the current record level of $10 billion”, Mr. Organ.

“Brendan Nelson is responsible for this mess. His ill thought-out and offensive fee rises have forced students and their families to occupy university offices instead of studying. The Government has the money to spend on public education, but chooses not to.”

“Brendan Nelson has proved he doesn’t care about students and would prefer to increase their debts. Is the time for students everywhere to get organised and follow the lead of Flinders University colleagues.

“The Greens believe that education, like health care, must be free for everyone.” Michael Organ said.
