Aged care nursing scholarships now available

“Scholarships to the value of $5000 per semester, up to $30,000 in total, are available to local people who want to enter Aged Care Nursing,” Dr Sharman Stone, Federal Member for Murray, advised today.

The Aged Care Nursing Scholarship Scheme aims to encourage more men and women to enter aged care nursing, particularly in regional, rural and remote Australia.

“Preference is given to applicants living and working in regional, rural and remote areas such as ours,” Dr Stone said.

Students must be enrolled or wanting to enrol in a course leading to a qualification to practice as a Registered/Division 1 nurse. Scholarships will be available to students in any year of the undergraduate nursing degree or at the commencement of the course.

‘This is an important opportunity for local people. We have a number of excellent Aged Care Facilities which are often looking for staff. As well, a new 40 bed aged care facility is to be built in Shepparton for the Koori community. Ten of the scholarships are earmarked for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants,” said Dr Stone. “There are 250 scholarships available in 2009.

“Latrobe University campuses at both Shepparton and Bendigo offer 3 year Bachelor of Nursing degrees which means people can study locally.

“If you are interested in a great career in aged care, or wish to upgrade qualifications, I encourage you to follow up and make an application,” said Dr Stone.

Applications must be received by Friday 22 August 2008
