Senator Cory Bernardi Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Families, Community Services

Senator Cory Bernardi, Coalition spokesman for disabilities, today congratulated the Australian Paralympic Team on a successful campaign in Beijing.

Senator Bernardi said all Australians can be proud of the Australian Team who placed fifth on the medal tally with an impressive 79 medals.

“The Australian Team faced intense and unexpected competition from countries such as the Ukraine and South Africa and still managed to finish in the top five,” Senator Bernardi said.

“Representing Australia in sport is a great honour, and I congratulate all the athletes on their hard work and dedication. Their efforts are an inspiration to all Australians.

“As well as being a great team effort, this Paralympics featured some outstanding individual results from Australian athletes. Tim Sullivan’s historic win of a tenth gold medal made him Australia’s most successful Paralympian ever. Matt Cowdrey led the personal medal count with an amazing eight medals and 14-year-old Madison de Rozario’s silver medal made her the youngest Australian athlete to win a medal.

“On behalf of the Coalition, I congratulate all members of the Australian Paralympic Team on an amazing effort and wish them all the best in preparing for the London Games in 2012.”
