MEDIA RELEASE Senator the Hon. Sandy Macdonald Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence Deputy Leader of The Nationals in the Senate PARLSEC 015/2006 Wednesday 15 March 2006 GROUND BROKEN FOR LYONS DEVELOPMENT The first stage of development of the new Darwin suburb of Lyons has been officially launched today at a groundbreaking ceremony attended by Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Senator Sandy Macdonald. Senator Macdonald said the Lyons development would accommodate Australian Defence Force (ADF) families in Darwin. “The Lyons Development is a joint venture between the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) and Canberra Investment Corporation (CIC), which will see the development of a total of 700 news residential allotments,” he said. “Around 300 new homes will be built to accommodate Defence families and the remaining blocks will be made available to the community via a ballot system.” “This is a significant day for the people of Darwin, especially in terms of this new development which has been designed with input from the local community. It will fully integrate with top-end climate and lifestyle,” Senator Macdonald said. “The ADF is an important part of the Darwin community, and Lyons will provide quality homes to meet the needs of service families.” In addition to extensively landscaped parklands and a neighbourhood centre, provision has also been made for a child care facility for Lyons, which is expected to be operational by June 2007. Senator Macdonald said the Lyons development will provide opportunities for local business by creating employment and utilising local materials and subcontractors. “More than 30 jobs will be created on-site through construction activities, with significant flow-on for off-site jobs through the manufacturing of construction components, and maintenance requirements for equipment,” he said. BMD Pty Ltd has won the $8.5 million contract to manage civil works for the first phase of the Lyons development which will deliver 339 housing lots.
