MEDIA RELEASE

LINDSAY TANNER MP SHADOW MINISTER FOR COMMUNICATIONS

CAREY v KANGAS ON DELAY THIS FRIDAY COURTESY OF JOHN HOWARD

This Friday night’s much anticipated AFL clash between the Adelaide Crows and the Kangaroos will be on late night delayed telecast for the many AFL fans in the ACT, Southern NSW, the Gold Coast, Northern Territory and Far North Queensland.

AFL fans in these areas can thank John Howard for not being able to see this great match live on Friday. The Howard Government has failed to fix the AFL broadcasting mess. This has been a disaster for AFL fans in mixed AFL/Rugby markets such as the ACT and the Northern Territory. Many of these fans have missed out on live AFL coverage on Friday nights for more than a year due to the Nine network holding the rights to both rugby league and AFL on Fridays.

Canberra fans watching the delayed telecast of the Kangaroos v Adelaide match will not know who has won until about 1.30am.

Last year the Howard Government said they would fix these problems. Communications Minister Senator Alston said he had a gentleman’s agreement with the new broadcasters to ensure the same level of coverage would continue under the new arrangements. The Howard Government is all talk and no action. The Government has done nothing about the problem and has just hoped that it would go away.

AFL fans in the Northern States and territories who miss out on live coverage of the Kangaroos taking on Wayne Carey this Friday night can thank John Howard. John Howard is just too gutless to take on the media giants in the interests of AFL fans.
