New research on assessment of students' job readiness

The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard has release a report that will inform the assessment and reporting of employability skills of senior secondary students.

The report suggests that while assessing students’ employability skills is complex, it is necessary to ensure students can identify their skills and the areas they need to improve.

The report, Study into the Assessment and Reporting of Employability Skills of Senior Secondary Students, focuses on the work undertaken by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER).

It highlights six approaches through which senior secondary students’ achievement of employability skills could be assessed and reported.

The eight employability skills are: communication; teamwork; problem-solving; initiative and enterprise; planning and organising; self-management; learning; and technological aptitude.

The findings of the report will be of interest to the broader schools sector as well as informing the development of the Rudd Government’s Job Ready Certificate.

The Job Ready Certificate will be funded as part of the Government’s $6.4 million investment over four years to strengthen partnerships between business, schools and industry.

It will recognise the achievement of employability skills by secondary students undertaking vocational education and training in schools and Australian Apprenticeships.

It will also give employers information they need to assess whether a young person is ready for work.

The study was overseen by an advisory group, comprising representatives from the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Business Council of Australia, Australian Council of State School Organisations and representatives from national parent groups, principal groups and independent groups.
