ATTORNEY-GENERAL THE HON ROBERT McCLELLAND MP

NEWS RELEASE

14 November 2008 115/2008

UL-HAQUE REPORT RELEASED

Attorney-General Robert McClelland today welcomed the completion of the Inquiry by the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security (IGIS) into ASIO’s actions in relation to Mr Izhar Ul-Haque.

The report is the outcome of an inquiry initiated by the IGIS, Mr Ian Carnell, in November 2007.

“In view of the public interest in this matter, I have made the unclassified report publicly available,” Mr McClelland said.

The Attorney-General noted that the report had endorsed the recommendations of the Street Review into the Interoperability of the AFP and its National Security Partners.

“Action has already been taken to implement the Street Review,” Mr McClelland said.

This includes a new Joint Operations Protocol between ASIO and the AFP; new Counter-Terrorism Prosecution Guidelines; and the development of training exercises and secondments to provide officers of each agency with greater awareness of the work of the other agencies.

“I am confident that ASIO is working to address the issues identified in the IGIS’s Report,” Mr McClelland said.

The unclassified report of the Ul-Haque matter is available on the IGIS’s website at www.igis.gov.au/statements.cfm.
