Innovative development opportunities for rural specialists

Medical specialists working in rural and regional areas will benefit from extra funding for professional development announced today by the Minister for Health and Ageing, Tony Abbott.

Mr Abbott said $1.4 million extra would be made available to the Support Scheme for Rural Specialists (SSRS), bringing total funding in 2003-04 to $3.8 million.

"The aim of the scheme, which started this year, is to help overcome the isolation of rural specialists from the professional development programs available to their counterparts in capital cities," Mr Abbott said.

"The absence of these opportunities is often cited by medical practitioners as a disincentive to practicing in a rural area. The funding will help overcome this professional isolation."

Mr Abbott said that 22 projects had been funded so far this calender year.
