GM HOLDEN: SEVEN MILLION REASONS TO CELEBRATE

Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research today congratulated GM Holden on the production of its seven millionth vehicle in this, its 60th anniversary year.

Speaking at the GM Holden operations plant in Elizabeth, South Australia, Senator Carr applauded Holden on its proud history and its ongoing contribution to the Australian automotive industry.

"Since the first vehicle rolled off the production line, Holden has proved to be a crucial player in the Australian automotive industry," Senator Carr said.

"Holden has produced iconic vehicles including the EH Holden, the Monaro, the Torana and the Commodore which have become an important part of Australian automotive history - and I am sure there are plenty more to come.

"The Rudd Government recognises that the automotive industry makes a vital contribution to the economy through employment, exports and innovation," Senator Carr said.

To assess the challenges facing the industry, to find ways to overcome barriers to success and to identify future opportunities, the Government commissioned the Bracks review which was released last week.

"The review provides a range of recommendations to inform the development of a policy framework which will drive the Australian automotive industry well into the 21st century.

"The Rudd Government is committed to a strong, prosperous and innovative automotive industry and will be issuing its response to the issues raised in the Bracks review shortly.

"Australia is one of around 15 countries in the world that have the know-how to produce motor vehicles. It is crucial that we work toward an industry that is successful and competitive in the new world of global competition, environmental challenges and increasing fuel costs," Senator Carr said.
