With Labor greatly reducing the pool of funding for environmental works, Federal Member for Wannon, David Hawker, is urging local groups to apply quickly for what funding is available before applications close on 1 August.

“The Caring for Country grants are part compensation for taking 40% of the funding off local catchment management bodies and 20% off Landcare groups across Australia. The Coalition’s EnviroGrants, Environmental Stewardship Programme, natural resource management officers and Coastal Network grants have also been abolished,” Mr Hawker said.

“As there is very little support left from federal or state Labor governments for environmental support work in regional communities, I urge Western Victorians to apply quickly for these funds to battle weeds, feral animals, drought and the aftermath of floods.

“The grants range in value from $80,000 to $400,000.”

Mr Hawker said it’s disappointing the Labor Government has decided that small volunteer groups like Landcare will need to compete against universities, local, state and federal government agencies, like the CSIRO and the CRCs, for funding.

“This will be a highly competitive process with a crowded field of applicants, however as the saying goes, you have to be in it to win it,” he said.

“I urge local applicants to give it a try, and to urgently contact my office if they need further information on 1300 131 692.”

Applications need to be made online, unless there are exceptional reasons why this cannot be done, and applications must be received by close of business on 1 August 2008.
