Regional funding - scare-mongering not welcomed

Federal Member for Dobell Ken Ticehurst today urged opposition leader Mark Latham not to use

his visit to the Central Coast to score cheap political points by falsely asserting that the Central

Coast campus is worse off under the Howard Government.

Mr Ticehurst today reiterated the recent announcement that the University of Newcastle and, in

particular, the Central Coast Campus would benefit greatly from Minister Brendan Nelson’s

university reform package.

“The university as a whole will receive an additional $26.5 million in core funding under Minister

Nelson’s package. The university is also set to benefit from the additional 3292 places allocated

to NSW for 2005,” Mr Ticehurst said.

“This is good news for the Central Coast. We have a rapidly growing region and a Federal

government that is committed to ensuring that we have the additional places to support this

growth.

Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Newcastle, Brian English, said he was happy with

the package, which would leave the Central Coast Campus far better off than if it had received

‘regional status’.

In his meeting with university officials and local MPs last week, Mr English said, “[Under the

new package] we’re talking about receiving an extra 10 percent places to meet demand. Regional

loading would have only meant a 1.5 percent loading on current places.”

Mr Ticehurst, “Clearly, we have a situation where ALP politicians are merely creating a scare

campaign on ‘regional funding’ to score cheap political points.

“States are currently preparing submissions re the allocation of new university places. Why isn’t

Mr Latham pressuring his state Labor colleagues to ensure that the Central Coast Campus gets its

fair share of places?

“I am concerned that under a Latham Labor Government, our Central Coast Campus would suffer

adversely.

“Central Coast students are currently being hit hard but Mr Latham’s state Labor colleagues in

Macquarie Street.

“Students enrolling in most Hunter Institute of TAFE courses at Ourimbah, Wyong and Gosford

campuses are facing fee increases of between $169 and $1,000!

“Why isn’t Mr Latham spending his energies fixing this problem that is hitting many young

people in my region who need education the most?

“Quite clearly, Mr Latham needs to re-assess his priorities for the Central Coast. He needs to start

pressuring his state Labor colleague to support the allocation of university places to our Central

Coast Campus, and to review the TAFE system. He should also take a look at his own education

policy which would leave Newcastle university $6 million worse off,” he said.
