Wed, 28th May 2008 ANOTHER BOWEN BUNGLE - THE ASSISTANT TREASURER MISLEADS ON PETROL PRICES

Michael Keenan MP Shadow Assistant Treasurer, Superannuation and Corporate Governance

Question Time today shows up Fuel Watch as the ill-thought out and shambolic policy that it is

The Assistant Treasurer has today been caught out deliberately misleading Australian families on petrol prices.

On AM radio today, the Minister stated, in defence of the Fuel Watch scheme in Western Australia: ''Well, in Perth today you will find that the price of fuel is on average less than the other capital cities.''

This is, quite simply, not true.

According to MotorMouth.com.au the average price of fuel today is:

$1.40 in Brisbane

$1.49 in Melbourne

$1.50 in Sydney

$1.51 in Adelaide

and has increased to $1.55 in Perth.

Mr Keenan said: ''I would like the Minister to explain why he clearly and deliberately misled listeners about the effectiveness of Labor's Fuel Watch scheme.

''Australians deserve better than a Labor Government who pretends to care, puts damaging measures in place, and then throws its hands up and says it has done all it can to help.
